My understanding of Bodhisattvas

Recommended Posts

I have read in some Buddhist texts that Bodhisattvas postpone their realization inorder to help others.  This was a bit problematic for me to understand at that time.  Right now I feel that Bodhisattvas are those that have reached such levels of refinement that if they choose to, they could just revel in a blissful state and not have to come down and undertake actions at worldly levels.  But they seem to choose to come down from such high levels of refinement inorder just to help others.  Indeed they are noble, and their path is noble because they guide others to the light they discovered.

Bodhisattvas

I think this may be fantasy.  Where are they then, where are the people that they help ?  If they do help then it must be just a few.
People on the Earth are unloved, lost, bereft in a spiritual desert and their souls ache if they still feel anything.  They dream of being who descend from heaven and love everyone.  And as these people lie on their backs dying, they still dream of love carrying them off like a mother or father.

Unfortunately many spiritual seekers spend their time with these fantasies, they ache for love so much they cannot really practice.  They dream of one day being a Bodhisattva because they don't have the honesty to simply cry, to cry and cry and cry until the floor is wet.  To collapse, to totally give up ... give up holding on.  Give up being strong.  Give up waiting to be saved.  A painful process that requires a sort of inner crumbling.  And to see yourself honestly a small person on a small planet.

But it is from such falls, simple honesty, it is from giving up ... that one becomes ready to practice honestly.
Those that hold on to their lives will lose them, those that give them up for My sake's will gain them.

It’s not despondently giving up the individual hope and effort and rely on someone to help save.  That is not what Buddhas and Bodhisatvas are about.

Buddhas, or fully realized beings are out there sharing their wisdom, and help support all beings and the mandala all of the time.  The universe exists in its current state because of their support.  Bodhisatwas are beings on the path, they follow the path of the realized masters.  Their compassion is reflected in their actions as help to other beings.

I love the saying "God works in mysterious ways." I don't know it's origins but i've heard it a hundred times in my life.

Before realized it is impossible for beings to say what is "good" (or takes us to realization and helps others to their realization) and what is the ego or our selfish motives. You hear people proclaim this and that to be the way to go and with further investigation see them pointing at the ego. (Take positive psychology for instance.)

And then you hear people ask where God is when you see children crying their hunger.

God works in mysterious ways, the ulitmate truth is much bigger than helping people in their worldly agony. Or as siva so well put it: It's not what Buddhas or Bodhisatvas are about

Yes, God/universe is bigger and works in mysterious ways beyond the limited understanding of the local mind.  However, I am of the view that worldly agonies are the results of the mind, and can ease away eventually in time for those on the path of Buddhas/Bodhisatvas.  There cold be some physical agonies as long as there is birth and a physical body. I was making the point that one does not just wait despondently for a Buddha or God to remove all their problems. Like the saying, ‘God helps those who help themselves’, I believe when we do our part, the universe helps us in its own mysterious ways.
