TTC Chapter 17

Recommended Posts

17

The greatest things in life are rarely realized or known by Men.  But Men always know the things they love and treasure, and that which is feared and despised.
Having a simple heart one knows how to trust openly. Those who do not trust openly, can never be trusted to have a good heart.
When deeds are performed with few words, people can say "we've done it".

Any thoughts?

The very highest is barely known.
Then comes that which people know and love.
Then that which is feared,
Then that which is despised.

Who does not trust enough will not be
trusted.

When actions are performed
Without unnecessary speech,
People say, "We did it!"

----

"In the highest antiquity, the people did not know that there were rulers.
In the next age they loved them and praised them.
In the next they feared them.
In the next they despised them.
Thus it was that when faith in the Dao was deficient in the rulers a want of faith in them ensued.
How irresolute did those earliest rulers appear, showing by their reticence the importance which they set upon their words!
Their work was done and their undertakings were successful, while the people all said, 'We are as we are, of ourselves!' "
-  Translated by James Legge, 1891, Chapter 17

---

"People take the great ruler for granted and are oblivious to his presence.
The good ruler is loved and acclaimed by his subjects.
The mediocre ruler is universally feared.
The bad ruler is generally despised;
Because he lacks credibility, the subjects do not trust him.
On the other hand, the great ruler seldom issues orders.
Yet he appears to accomplish everything effortlessly.
To his subjects everything he does is just a natural occurrence."
-  Translated by Hang Hiong Tan, Chapter 17

Here is my take.

Quote

About being realized.

Quote

But Men always know the things they love and treasure, and that which is feared and despised.

Attachments to both pleasure and issues and fears. Men/women are caught up in "things"

Quote

Having a simple heart one knows how to trust openly. Those who do not trust openly, can never be trusted to have a good heart.

When one is not so caught up in wants and desires their heart is open. Such a one can think of others and be trusted compared to those with a closed heart who can only think about themselves.

When deeds are performed with few words, people can say "we've done it".

No need to take credit or to promote what you have done. Share it and promote others rather than yourself.

I like this translation a lot it is very beautiful and clear.

There is no where to go and no-one to be, trust your self, trust your life, trust the earth ... through trust all can be known.  Today people might interpret that as trusting their social personality !  But it means feel inside for the real one.  The escape is within.

Once you leave the garden of Eden there is a progression of mistrust, mistrust leads to mistrust, confusion to more confusion ... eventually if you say to someone trust yourself ... they don't really understand what it means so confused they are.
Perhaps we act as if God has made some terrible mistakes that we must urgently fixed ... is it worth thinking differently about this ?
